Groundwork Caerphilly’s Solid Ground programme is a community led environmental regeneration programme with the aim of demonstrating how working with individuals and groups can bring positive social and environmental change to rural communities across the Caerphilly Borough.
The programme is just one of a number of initiatives delivered by Groundwork Caerphilly, a key player in local regeneration and sustainable development.
Supported by the Rural Development Plan for Wales, Solid Ground’s end goal is for communities to take ownership of their local environment in order to secure long term sustainability by doing more with less.
Throughout the summer a great deal of work has been carried out at Hafod Deg Day Centre, Rhymney. Volunteers, users, staff and community members have been working closely with the Solid Ground team to design and develop the garden at the centre.
Great progress has been made in the construction of a French style ‘petanque’/bowls pitch. The pitch has been built to encourage centre users and the community to adopt a more active lifestyle.
Excellent progress has already been made by another Groundwork programme, Mentro Allan, in attracting interest in the facility from across Caerphilly and workshops are set to start at the centre over the coming months.
In addition, the Solid Ground team has been aiding users and volunteers to grow vegetables at the centre and thus further promoting healthy living and the concept of sustainability.
The garden at Hafod Deg continues to play a key role in encouraging local residents to take responsibility for their environment and acts as an example of what can be achieved by an enthused and motivated community.
